17/Feb/2025: Green Alert for the big wave surfing competition Tudor Nazaré Big Wave Challenge.
FIRST CALL Tuesday, February 18, 2025 9:30 AM WET (local time).
Typically, the competition lasts only one day. If it's impossible to complete the competition in a day, due to lack of sea conditions or other reasons, it may continue the next day.
The competition takes place at Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal and is part of the WSL Big Wave Tour. It is open to the public, both near the lighthouse area and at Praia do Norte in Nazaré.
Tips for Watching the Big Wave Surfing Competition in Nazaré (Tourist)
- Time: Go early if you want to secure a good spot to watch. The walk can take time, and finding parking may also take a while.
- Parking: It is recommended to park outside the Nazaré Sítio perimeter and walk or use available public transport. It's best to leave the car farther away, in the Praia do Norte area, as parking near the lighthouse and Sítio da Nazaré won't be possible. Be prepared to walk over 1 km.
- Viewing Locations: Despite the large number of people, there is plenty of space on the Praia do Norte slope. Therefore, it is possible to move around and switch between different viewing points as usual.
- Terrain Conditions: Wear comfortable, non-slip footwear as the ground can be slippery.
- Equipment: It is recommended to wear several layers of clothing, including protection against rain and cold, as some rain is forecasted, and the weather changes a lot throughout the day in Nazaré. Bring an umbrella and a waterproof cover to sit on the ground, as the area may be dirty or wet.
- Food: There are restaurants more than 500 meters away, but they will be very crowded. There are also small food trucks 500m up the hill. However, it is recommended to bring a kit with water, snacks, and fruits in a backpack to last the day.
- Restrooms: There should be some portable toilets, but the options are limited, so you may need to resort to nature :)
- Lighthouse Access: The Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo (Nazaré Lighthouse) will be closed to the public on the competition day, but it will still be possible to watch the event from various areas around, including the descent to the beach. Be careful near the cliffs and by the sea on the beach!
- Event Changes: If conditions are unfavorable, the competition may be postponed to the following day.
